7 Tips for Uplighting Any Venue

Use mood lighting to set a breathtaking scene

So you’ve booked your venue. Great! Now you need to put your own stamp on it. Did you manage to secure your dream venue, or simply the best your budget allowed? Either way, it doesn’t really matter – it’s the celebration inside that counts.

Think about it: the chances are somebody has already hired your venue before you. It probably hosted lots of weddings and other events. It’s almost impossible to book a venue which hasn’t already been used for something similar. So, what really matters is using the space to create a celebration which is uniquely yours. Style the room like nobody else has, make it yours, make it unforgettable and make it perfect for you.

Personalised mood lighting is a great way to do it.

Mood lighting and uplighting creates a magical atmosphere. Even the most plain, simple room takes on a new life with the right lighting. So if you’re styling your dream wedding venue, or any other special event, these tips will make sure you get it right.

Colour carefully

Think carefully about the colour of your lighting. The obvious option is to stick with the main colour of your general theme, which is often the right choice. But if it’s not done right it can wash-out your venue. Flooding the room with the same colour that’s on your room decorations can leave everything looking the same.

Instead, consider a complementary colour which shows-off your venue, decorations and dresses. If you have trouble choosing, speak to your venue manager to see what’s been done before and ask your lighting provider for help.

Style it for the venue

The style of your lighting should suit your room and really get the best from it. It should highlight the room’s best features and transform the bits you’re less keen on. There’s no point adding lighting that doesn’t make your room look stunning or create the right atmosphere.

Make sure you look at the different forms of lighting, such as LED uplighting and spotlights, to make sure you know the difference and choose the right style for your venue. It’s always a good idea to meet your lighting provider at the venue to discuss your options, explain what you need and make a plan together.

Arrangement is key

Just like the style of your lighting, your arrangement is key. Rooms that have lots of natural light won’t need as much lighting as naturally darker rooms. You might also need to take the season, weather and time of day into account depending on your venue and how the natural light affects it.

Again, meeting with your lighting provider and the venue manager at the venue is important. Ask to see how the room looked at earlier events and the options your provider can give you.

Installation situation

Make sure you have an agreement with your provider about who is installing the lighting. The last thing you need is someone who just delivers your lights then vanishes. It has happened before, and leaving the installation to some waiters and a couple of tipsy cousins on the morning of the wedding isn’t a good idea.

Organise it with your supplier (get it in writing, if you need to) and make sure they know exactly what you expect them to do.  This is something we do as standard will all events!

Safety first

Nobody wants lights malfunctioning, leads tripping-up grannies or controls in-reach of inquisitive little fingers. Making sure all your lighting is safe and secure should be a top priority.

Your installer should be qualified and experienced in dealing with the equipment he’s using. They should be good-quality systems which are tested regularly. Don’t be shy about asking about this stuff, you’re just making sure everything goes to plan and experienced suppliers will expect it anyway.

Ask an expert

The simplest thing to do is ask an expert. Ask to see examples of their work, their lighting equipment and testimonials from previous customers. The best suppliers don’t have anything to hide and are happy to oblige, meaning you can rest easy knowing it’s all being looked after by the best in the business.
